A man who drowned in an Irwinton pond has been identified as 22-year-old Tavarious Jamaine Veal.
Wilkinson County Coroner William H. Matthews Sr. said authorities had been searching for Veal since Sunday. Deputies had checked a 5-acre clay pond but didn’t see his body until Wednesday.
“He walked away Sunday evening from home, and I don’t think anybody had seen him (since). He went over to this clay hole, which was like his special place,” Matthews said.
Matthews speculated Veal had fallen into the water. He’d been found fully dressed in the hole, near Ga. 57 and U.S. 441.Identification was confirmed by DNA by the GBI crime lab in Decatur. Toxicology results and other tests are pending, but foul play is not suspected.
Wilkinson County Mortuary has charge of the arrangements.
