Two brothers who went fishing in a kaolin pond just south of Gordon on Sunday apparently drowned, officials said.
The bodies of Melvin Harris, 55, of Wilkinson County, and Eugene Harris, 61, who ran a shoe shop on Montpelier Avenue in Macon, were pulled from the water Monday afternoon, said Wilkinson County Coroner William Matthews Sr. The coroner said Harris had been a janitor at a Wilkinson County school for more than 30 years.
“It looked like they had gone out Sunday evening and gone fishing at an abandoned clay hole, where they used to mine clay, and they didn’t come home Sunday night,” Matthews said. “So the family went searching for them ... but they couldn’t find them.”
Authorities later discovered the spot where the men had been fishing, not far from a dirt road west of Ga. 18.“It looked like one of them had fallen off the bank and one of them had jumped in to get him and both of them drowned,” Matthews said.
