It may be weeks before investigators know how a homeless man died in an abandoned bus near downtown Macon.
Tuesday’s autopsy was inconclusive on the cause of death but detected no signs of violence, Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said.
“My gut feeling is I think it is a medical illness,” Jones said. “I feel good they didn’t find any bullet holes or stab wounds in him.”
Others who live on the streets detected an odor, and authorities found a man believed to be 52-year-old Todd Phillips dead in an old Macon Transit Authority bus parked near the railroad tracks not far from Fifth and Oglethorpe streets at about 8:45 p.m. Monday.
Phillips, who was originally from Barnesville, had been living in the city for about 15 years, Jones said.
The body is being sent to the GBI forensic lab in Atlanta to be examined by an anthropologist to confirm Phillips’ identity because the corpse was badly decomposed.
