Twiggs County Coroner Harold Reece Jr. will hold a formal inquest into the reported suicide of county jail inmate Robert Lee Chambers, 39.
The inquest is scheduled for 10 a.m. June 24 in the county courthouse. Reece said the inquest is a matter of procedure. A GBI Investigation autopsy turned up nothing unusual.
“We’re just doing what the law says. Everything’s pretty much cut and dried,” Reece said.
Sheriff Darren Mitchum has said Chambers hanged himself with a telephone cord May 17.
He had been arrested earlier that day on a DUI charge and had been arrested two days earlier on traffic charges including another DUI. Deputies put him on suicide watch and took his belt and shoelaces.
Mitchum said last month that a booking officer keeping an eye on Chambers was called away for about 10 minutes, which is when Chambers killed himself. He was alone in the cell.
