Three people and a dog died in two unrelated car wrecks in Bibb County this morning.
The first wreck happened about 4:40 a.m. at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Riverside Park Boulevard, according to a news release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said Jose Rizo, 30, died in that incident. Rizo, of a Northside Drive address, was pronounced dead at 5 a.m. He was not wearing a seat belt.
Rizo was driving a 1997 Ford Explorer south on Riverside Drive when the vehicle left the road, knocked over a light pole and hit several parked vehicles in the parking lot of Butler Toyota, according to the release.
Never miss a local story.
The second wreck happened on Interstate 75 just south of Sardis Church Road. A northbound 2005 Ford F-150 pickup truck pulling a U-Haul tailer left the road and struck a guardrail barrier head-on, according to the release. The truck burst into flames. A man, a young girl and a dog were killed in the wreck, Jones said. He did not give the names of the deceased Saturday afternoon because their families had not yet been notified. He said the people in the truck were from Delray Beach, Fla., and apparently were relocating to Missouri. The trailer was full of furniture, Jones said.
Several northbound lanes of I-75 were blocked while emergency crews attended to the wreck. The lanes were reopened about 10 a.m.
Jones said the destruction caused by the fire in the pickup truck was horrific.
“In my 32 years of driving an ambulance and 20 years in the coroner’s office, this is the worst wreck I have ever seen in my career,” he said. “This is No. 1.”
