Twenty one-ton bales of hay caught fire on a Baldwin County road Tuesday afternoon, closing down the road to traffic for about 45 minutes, authorities said.
A driver was hauling the hay bales on a flat-bed trailer on Ga. 24 at Stembridge Road about noon when he noticed there was a fire in the hay, said Brandon Barth, the public information officer for Baldwin County Fire Rescue.
He tried to turn around and return to Washington County, where he had begun, but could not.
The county road department took heavy equipment to the scene to remove the hay from the trailer so that it could be spread out, and the fire was extinguished by firefighters, Barth said.
No injuries were reported. Authorities were on the scene about 3½ hours.
