The United States Attorney’s office, the Macon Police Department and groups throughout Bibb County are sponsoring a cleanup in the Village Green neighborhood.
Volunteers will gather at 8:30 a.m. Saturday to pick up trash and clean the neighborhood. The event will finish at noon with a lunch for volunteers in Village Green Park.
Pamela Lightsey, the community relations specialist for the U.S. Attorney’s office, said this effort is a first step.“This is just one of the many activities that we have come up with to make (Village Green) someplace that (residents) are proud to live in,” she said.
The effort is part of “Project Unity,” which aims to reduce crime and improve quality of life in the Bloomfield and Village Green neighborhoods.
Never miss a local story.
Residents suggested the cleanup, Lightsey said.
Another goal of the event is to help improve residents’ relationship with law enforcement.
“They’re the ones that are there 24/7 and can help law enforcement address issues,” she said.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Mentors Project of Bibb County, two churches, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and several other groups also are sponsoring the event.
