Burlington Stores, a fixture at Westgate Mall on Pio Nono Avenue since 1988, plans to move 2 miles to Macon Mall.
“We are thrilled to remain within the Macon community and are excited to continue to provide area residents with a valued shopping experience,” Burlington Chairman/CEO Tom Kingsbury said in a news release.
The national off-price retailer, also known as Burlington Coat Factory, plans to occupy about 69,500 square feet on the upper level of the mall in space formerly occupied by Sears, according to a news release from Hull Property Group, which owns the mall at 3661 Eisenhower Parkway. The mall’s Sears store closed in early 2012.
This will be the last large retailer to leave Westgate which opened in 1961 as Georgia’s first enclosed mall.
Initial work to prepare the space has begun, and construction will continue through the summer with the store expected to open this fall, the release stated.
“Burlington is a strong national retailer with a long-standing record of success, and we are thrilled for the store to join the Macon Mall,” Ky Widener, senior vice president of leasing for Hull Property Group, said in the release.
The store will feature “an upgraded look, feel and branding consistent with the retailer’s new store locations,” the release stated.
Burlington sells clothing and footwear. The store also includes home decor and gifts.
Hull Property Group bought the mall in 2010, and it embarked on a major redevelopment plan that included extensive renovations to the exterior and interior of the property.
It is leading an effort to establish a special tax district that would allow for upgrades on Eisenhower Parkway and the surrounding retail corridor from the mall to Interstate 475.
“The upcoming addition of Burlington reinforces that the Macon Mall and the surrounding retail area is a sought-after location that should not be overlooked,” said John Mulherin, vice president of government relations for Hull Property Group. “We are on the cusp of an exciting partnership with local leaders and businesses along the Eisenhower retail corridor that would help Macon attract more restaurants and retailers.”
Burlington has 16 stores in Georgia, including the one in Macon.
Founded in 1977, Hull Property Group is one of the largest privately owned retail real estate companies in the Southeast and has a portfolio in excess of 10 million square feet across Georgia, Alabama, North and South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
