A new-to-Macon restaurant is expected to join the Dunkin’ Donuts shop on Forsyth Street.
Dallas, Texas-based Which Wich, a gourmet sandwich-style eatery, is planned at 860 Forsyth St., and it will be in the same building as the Dunkin’ Donuts on the former site of the Douglass House and Tremont Baptist Church. Both franchise businesses will be owned by Lou Patel, said Connie Alires, director of franchise development for the company.
An effort to reach Patel late Friday was unsuccessful.
The businesses will be “side by side, and each will have their own separate identity” with separate entrances, Alires said. “However, I understand there will be a pass through in the interior of the building, so you can get from one restaurant to the other.”
Never miss a local story.
Although Alires wasn’t sure when construction is expected to begin, Which Wich is projected to open in the third or fourth quarter of this year.
Ordering food at Which Wich is a little different than most sandwich shops. Customers will chose the type of sandwich, grab a bag for that sandwich and pick up a marker, checking off on the bag specific items or dressings wanted.
There is more than lettuce and tomato to chose from, such as red, crispy strings or caramelized onions, according to the online menu. Other choices include spinach, dried cranberries, candied walnuts, cheese and spreads such as marinara, pesto and hummus.
After the bag is filled out, customers put their name on the bag and hand it to the cashier.
“We’ll call your name once your wich is ready,” according to the website.
The company has been in the Atlanta market for several years and has been expanding, she said. It has 330 locations, including foreign countries. Currently, there are 17 Which Wich locations in Georgia, most in the Atlanta area with two in the Augusta area.
“Macon is just a natural fit,” Alires said. “We are looking forward to doing some awesome things.”
The restaurant will be about 1,400 square feet, which is typical for a store, she said. They employ about 25 full- and part-time workers. Stores usually are open 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday with shorter hours on Sunday.
Patel signed up for two Which Wich locations in Macon, but Alires did not know if he had selected the second location. The company “hopefully” will put two more stores in Warner Robins, she said.
