Cathy Kirkland, owner, of Sew Bizzy, 415 Cherry St., Macon, 254-8112
How long have you been in business?: Kirkland has been in business for two and half years. After her husband sold the paint store where she worked as a secretary for 25 years, Kirkland said she “couldn’t do the sitting-at-home thing. I told him I wanted to do something I enjoyed doing.”
Kirkland’s grandmother taught her to sew as a child, and it was “something I’ve always loved doing so it was a perfect opportunity for me to get the monogram machine and try to make a living at it. It’s been hard. Getting started in Macon is really hard.”
What do you like best about your job?: “I enjoy working with people. I love creating something different.”
What is your specialty?: Kirkland not only does custom monogramming, but she also does alternations. She can sew most anything, including curtains and clothing for adults and children.
“I make personalized gift baskets. ... I’m licensed to do Mercer (University’s) logo. I can personalize bookbags. I’ve got a lot of blank items that can be personalized. I do a lot of applique work.”
What are your future plans?: “I would like to see the business grow. ... I might sell online in the future.”
