One of the five Macon-Bibb County swimming pools expected to be open this summer has been closed for about two weeks and will remain closed until a contractor installs a new pump, Recreation Director Dale “Doc” Dougherty said Thursday.
“All the pools are running except Bloomfield, where the motor broke down,” he said.
The pool’s equipment is fairly new but seems to include a ‘lemon’ pump motor,” Dougherty said.
Recreation staff expects some pump problems every summer, he said.
Never miss a local story.
The Freedom Park pool has been closed for three years now due to its poor condition, including major leaks.
Three pools are open on alternate days, but the busiest pool -- at the East Macon Recreation Center -- is now open Monday through Saturday, as Macon-Bibb commissioners recently ordered, Dougherty said.
The pool at the Booker T. Washington Center, though open, has a leak somewhere, he said. A fire hose and garden hose are running into it to keep the water level up. Recreation staff will look for the leak after the pool closes for the season, Dougherty said.
