WARNER ROBINS -- Former Warner Robins City Councilman John Williams is serving his 14-month sentence for extortion and related convictions in a low-security prison in eastern North Carolina.
Williams, 73, was found guilty earlier this year of using his position on council to get a $1,720 kickback from the sale of a $21,000 truck to the Warner Robins Police Department.
The sale was halted, and Williams gave the money back to the car salesman after he was questioned by FBI agents who were investigating him.
Williams, who was defeated in the November election, was convicted of extortion under the color of official right, making false statements to FBI agents and tampering with a witness.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons’ inmate locator on its website had Williams listed as in transit until recently.
Williams is now listed as serving his sentence at the Butner Low Federal Correctional Institution. The prison is part of the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in Butner, N.C. His release date is listed as June 26, 2013.
