Macon police say a man may have shot himself in the foot in more ways than one.
Deon Lashun Jones, 26, told detectives at the Medical Center of Central Georgia on Thursday that he had been shot in the foot by one of five men who had words with him on Bailey Avenue near Montpelier Avenue.
Jones said one man began firing at him and he ran away around 8:55 p.m. Wednesday. Jones had a small gunshot wound in the top center portion of his right foot, said Jami Gaudet, the department’s spokeswoman.
“The officers didn’t believe that Jones’s story was plausible since it would be nearly impossible to be shot in the foot at that angle while fleeing gunfire,” Gaudet said in a statement.
Jones said detectives found contradictory information and also realized Jones had given them a false name and date of birth. Computers found warrants for his arrest in the Atlanta area.
Gaudet said detectives ruled it a case of a self-inflicted gunshot wound by a convicted felon. Jones faces probation violations on charges of driving under the influence while speeding, driving under the influence and involuntary manslaughter.
Gaudet said other charges are being evaluated.
He was booked into the county jail at 4:20 a.m.
