PERRY -- City Council authorized two zoning requests and saw three returning council members sworn in for new terms during its regular meeting Tuesday.
Council approved a request by Perry Volunteer Outreach, Inc., to rezone and annex just more than five acres on U.S. 41 south of the city from residential to general commercial.
City documents show church facilities currently occupy the land, located at 2089 U.S. 41. They show the only immediate neighbors to the property are Grace Village, a women’s homeless shelter operated by Perry Volunteer Outreach, and Abba House, a long-term residential facility for women with substance abuse and mental health issues that Perry Volunteer Outreach provides facilities for.
Part of the facility on the re-zoned property is rented and used by a church and part is used by Abba House as a thrift store.
Council approved the zoning and annexation request unanimously.
Council also unanimously approved a request to rezone 21.7 acres from multi-family residential to planned unit district (PUD) at 1109 Gaines Drive. Officials said the property is currently known as Westwood Trailer Park and was changed at the request of Mullins Real Estate Properties LLC.
City officials said the current use of the property and occupant density will remain the same. They said the change specifies corrections to be made to the private infrastructure within the park and outlines other corrections and problems at the park that will be addressed.
