Dodge County has laid off about 20 employees -- mostly road department workers -- but plans to rehire them next year.
The affected workers were told of the three-month layoffs Thursday, said County Manager Kelly Bowen.
“We’ve been battling with our budget all year, cutting the areas we could cut,” Bowen said. The only thing left to cut was employees.”
The county employs about 140 workers. Bowen said the county’s budget began the year at about $9 million but has been whittled down to about $8.5 million.
The layoffs will save about $200,000 to $250,000, she said.
