Four Georgia College & State University freshmen, who were high school buddies from Gwinnett County, suffered a fatal crash early Thursday morning in Milledgeville.
Christian Smith lost control of a 2004 Mini Cooper after crossing the railroad tracks in the 700 block of N. Columbia Street just before 1 a.m., said Milledgeville Police Chief Woodrow Blue.
The car hit a curb and crashed into a tree as the men were returning from a trip to Wal-Mart, Blue said.
Alexander Delor and John Harof died in the back seat, while Smith and Tyler Zecker suffered serious injuries in the front seats, he said.
Never miss a local story.
"We don't believe alcohol was a factor in it, but we're still looking at the weather," Blue said. "Milledgeville is funny because it will rain in one part of town and not the other."
Smith and Zecker were initially treated at Oconee Regional Medical Center about a mile away before being transferred to The Medical Center of Central Georgia.
Acting college president Stas Preczewski issued condolences to the families of Delor and Harof and planned to have counselors available to assist students and faculty following the loss of the students.
