Macon native Russell Henley is one shot off the lead in the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur in Erin, Wis.Henley shot a 4-under-par 66 in the opening round of stroke play at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club.
The former University of Georgia standout made five birdies to go with one bogey on his round.
Gregor Main and Blake Biddle are tied for the lead at 5 under.
Henley is tied for third with three other golfers including Walker Cup teammates Peter Uihlein and Patrick Rodgers. Uihlein won last year’s U.S. Amateur, which was held at Chambers Bay.
The top 64 golfers through two rounds of stroke play advance to the match play bracket.
Former Taylor County standout Matt Nagy has yet to complete his round after teeing off at 1:55 p.m at Erin Hills Golf Course.
