The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a fight that happened early Saturday night at the Eastman Youth Development Campus that caused “significant” injuries.
“There was some violence against some of the staff and some of the detainees,” said Todd Lowery, assistant special agent in charge of the GBI’s Eastman field office.
One detainee was taken to an outside medical facility, and one correctional officer sustained minor injuries during the incident. The officer’s injuries didn’t require outside medical attention, according to a state Department of Juvenile Justice news release.
Spokeswoman Scheree Moore said she couldn’t release information about the detainee’s injuries.
Lowery said he didn’t know specific information about the severity of the injuries sustained during the fight, but he said “some of the injuries were significant.”
The GBI still is determining what prompted the fight, but agents know that several youths were involved.
The GBI is reviewing video surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses, Lowery said.
“It’ll take several days to review all the evidence.”
Moore said additional precautionary measures, such as increasing security staffing at the facility, have been put in place since the incident.
