Nearly 14 hours after an autistic Rentz boy wandered off from home, rescuers found him safe about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday.
Matthew Branum, 8, was found not far from where he was last seen off Taylor Rowland Road early Wednesday morning. Mathew left his home on Chelsey Drive in Rentz sometime after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and traveled three to four miles overnight to where he was spotted early Wednesday. At that point, a searcher tried to coax him to come near but the boy ran off into the woods, said Maj. Keith Golden of the Laurens County Sheriff's Office.
"He was found just a few feet from where we were," said NewsCentral videographer Perry Smith, who kept vigil with authorities at the scene. "He looks good."
Volunteers and representatives of the Laurens County Sheriff's Office, Laurens County Rural Firefighters, Department of Corrections Canine Handlers, Department of Corrections Probation Officers, Georgia State Patrol Troopers, Department of Natural Resources Rangers and the Georgia State Patrol Aviation Unit joined in the search for Matthew.
