WARNER ROBINS — Florida (New Tampa Little League) defeated Virginia (Bridgewater Little League) 2-1 in a Little League Softball Southeastern Region Tournament pool play game Friday.
Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Sydney Sheffer drove Alexa Sheets home on a fielder's choice. New Tampa evened the score in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Kamryn Beach.
In the top of the sixth, Virginia got runners on second and third with two outs, but Florida got out of the inning on an impressive defensive play. First baseman Skyler Boynton did a full split to haul in the throw and keep her foot on the bag for the third out.
In the bottom of the sixth, Beach legged out an infield single and advanced to second on a passed ball with one out, then moved to third on a groundout. The game ended on a controversial call. Meagan Bell hit a grounder to second and a play was made at first as Beach crossed home plate. The umpire, however, ruled that first baseman Natalie Helmick's foot came off the bag, and Bell was ruled safe to end the game.

On Saturday, Florida (2-0) plays Tennessee at 10 a.m. and Virginia (0-2) plays West Virginia at 4 p.m.
