WARNER ROBINS - In a game of firsts, Florida opened the 2010 Little League Softball Southeastern Region Tournament with a 8-1 victory over West Virgina Thursday morning.
Florida pitcher Makaleigh Dooley earned the win in the first-ever game at Little League Southeast Park. She pitched all six innings, striking out four and allowing just two hits. Dooley also had two hits and drove in two runs.
The first pitch in the new park came at 10:31 a.m. Florida had a 2-0 lead just minutes later. Maddy Hall reached first base on an error to lead off for Florida. She scored the tournament's first run on a triple by Erica Matich, who then scored on a ground out by Skyler Boynton.
Matich, a catcher, reached base in each of her three at-bats and scored three runs. She also stole two bases.
West Virginia broke through with an unearned run in the home half of the fifth. Stephanie Flouhouse reached on an error then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. She scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Hannah Morgan.
Florida is represented by New Tampa Little League. West Virginia's team is from Barboursville Little League.
