Jerry Barker Chevrolet in Byron is now Jeff Smith Chevrolet.
The dealership’s sale, which was finalized this week, is another expansion for Smith, who owns Jeff Smith Chrysler Dodge Jeep Kia in Perry. In May, he bought the former Eddie Wiggins dealership property in Warner Robins, where he opened what he called a “high-end used car” satellite store.
Barker had owned and operated the Chevrolet dealership in Byron for 11 years.
“I’ve been in the business a long time and just decided I wanted to semi-retire and continue on with my other business,” he said. “The opportunity came along, and he was looking for a place. I didn’t really have it for sale, but we worked it out.”
Barker declined to give the price of the sale but said, “it was a good thing.”
In May, Smith bought the Eddie Wiggins property through a foreclosure sale and said that he planned a $600,000 renovation to the building there. He could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Barker also owns and operates Jerry Barker Motorsports in Byron, next door to the Chevrolet dealership. The site had been a Hummer dealership before it closed in October 2008. The store sells utility and race car trailers, racing equipment and “some cars,” Barker said.
The Barker family will still have a presence at the Chevy dealership. Barker said two of his sons will continue to work there.
“Jeff’s a great guy, and it worked out good for both of us. He was looking for another location that was close to his Perry store and his Warner Robins store. He was looking to expand, and I was looking to go the other way.”
