No roads closed in Bibb County this morning but drivers were urged to stay off the streets until after noon following reports of up to four inches of snow fell Friday. Slush froze solid overnight as temperatures dropped down to about 25 degrees early today, but road conditions improved dramatically once the sun rose. Slushy spots will refreeze tonight as temperatures drop back to the upper 20s.
Interim Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Director LaTravius Smith said the heaviest snow fell in the Jeffersonville Road area with four inches, according to a deputy's report.
The interstate corridor was passable with caution and the Macon Transit Authority resumed operations by late morning.
"Our major problems were vehicle accidents and lack of sensibility on behalf of those drivers," Smith said in a telephone interview after deactivating the Emergency Operations Center at about 8 a.m. "So far no fatalities but one is really hanging on by a thread right now."
That most serious accident happened on the Newberg Avenue overpass at Interstate 75, she said.
Smith said she was amazed another driver was not seriously hurt in an accident at Ayers and Mumford roads.
"The girl took out two utilities poles and totaled her car but walked away without a scratch," Smith said.
That accident was responsible for the county's only power outage although trees were bending over power lines when she toured the county Friday night, she said.
"There were a lot of fender-benders and a couple of vehicles in the ditch because they slipped, but not many injuries."
