The Georgia Department of Labor released Thursday state unemployment claims for November, which is up slightly from October but down slightly when compared to November 2008.
The department announced that 72,298 laid-off workers filed initial claims for state unemployment insurance benefits in November, a decrease of 2,182, or 2.9 percent, from November 2008, according to a news release. But the number of initial claims filed in November showed an increase of 1,701, or 2.4 percent, from 70,597 in October.
“Georgia’s job market is mired in a prolonged downturn,” State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond said in the release.
In metro Macon, 1,780 initial claims were made in November, up from 1,637 or 8.7 percent, for the same month last year. For metro Warner Robins, 701 claims were made last month, up from 618 or 13.4 percent, for November 2008.
