ATHENS – The rumors were finally put to rest Wednesday with the announcement of major shakeups on Georgia’s defensive staff.
The school announced that defensive coordinator Willie Martinez, linebackers coach John Jancek and defensive ends coach Jon Fabris would all be let go following Georgia’s bowl game.
Head coach Mark Richt said Wednesday that the contracts of the three coaches would not be renewed, but all had been asked to stay on for the bowl game later this month. The moves leave only defensive tackles coach and recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner among the team’s four defensive coaches.
Both Martinez and Fabris were members of Richt’s original staff when he took over for Jim Donnan in 2001.
“I cannot express enough my thanks to all three for their contributions to our program,” Richt said in a statement released by the school. “However, in the final analysis I’m charged with providing the leadership and direction for the Georgia program and sometimes that means making difficult decisions. This was one of them.”
