Tattnall Square senior DeAndre Smelter signed a baseball scholarship with Georgia Tech on Tuesday morning, picking the Yellow Jackets over Georgia.
Smelter was recruited by Georgia Tech as a pitcher. He is expected to be a high draft pick in the MLB Draft in June.
“No matter what happens (with the draft), I know I have a home at Georgia Tech,” Smelter said. “You can do anything in life with a degree from Georgia Tech.”
Smelter has been named the Telegraph’s Baseball, Basketball and Football Player of the Year at various times in his career. He was also the Telegraph’s 2008 Male Athlete of the Year.

The senior has led the Tattnall baseball team to consecutive state championships. He gave up football, where he was a two-time all-state player with several major college scholarship offers, as a senior to concentrate on baseball.
