Johnny Wingers was honored Monday at Macon’s City Hall for his 16 years of service as Macon’s Emergency Management Agency director.
The 45-minute ceremony, which included Macon Mayor Robert Reichert presenting Wingers with a key to the city, was in front of a standing-room only crowd in the City Council chambers.
Much of the ceremony seemed like a comedy roast for Wingers, as speakers such as Bibb County Commission Chairman Sam Hart, Macon Police Chief Mike Burns, Bibb County Sheriff Jerry Modena, Macon-Bibb Fire Chief Marvin Riggins and others recalled some of their funniest and fondest memories of Wingers.
In the photo above, Reichert demonstrates how he saw Wingers once dance when he turned on the tornado warning system.
Never miss a local story.
"I’m really overwhelmed by the number of people who are here," Wingers told the crowd, adding about his time as EMA director: "I tell you what — I enjoyed it. It’s been a pleasure."
