Mercer overcame a sluggish start in a big way, turning a 10-0 deficit into a 17-point halftime lead as the Bears steamrolled Stetson 84-51 Thursday afternoon in the first round of the Atlantic Sun women's basketball tournament at Lipscomb's Allen Arena.
The Bears advance to play top seed East Tennessee State at 1 p.m. Friday in the semifinals after racking up their largest margin of victory of the season.
Mercer trailed 10-0 before breaking the drought. The Bears then made four straight to spark an 18-2 run. Courtney Ford gave Mercer the lead with 9:30 left, and she finished the half with 10 points. Kourtney Carter's baseline jumper gave the Bears their first double-digit lead at 29-16 with 4:52 left in the half. Carter had 12 points at the break.
Mercer ended up shooting a sizzling 57.1 percent for the game, led by Carter's 8-for-8 day.
