The new Academy Sports & Outdoors distribution center in Twiggs County, which has hired nearly 400 workers, is still hiring and plans to add another shift.
“We are busy,” said Director of Human Resources Amy Kelly. “We’re one of few retailers that are busy working. We decided we need a few more people.”
Academy Sports broke ground on the $70 million distribution center in November. The facility, with more than 1 million square feet, is located at the Ga. 96 exit off Interstate 16. The center began shipping goods to stores last month, Kelly said.
The distribution center currently has two shifts running seven days a week, she said. The first shift works 6 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday-Thursday and the second shift works 6 a.m.-6:30 p.m., Friday-Sunday. The company is planning to start a smaller second shift that would work 5 p.m.-3:30 a.m. Monday-Thursday, Kelly said.
Anyone interested can apply online at www.academy.com or at the facility 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday. The distribution center was built to serve several states across the Southeast.
Academy Sports & Outdoors began in 1938 with Academy Tire Shop in San Antonio, according to the company’s Web site.
In 1956, the business, then called Academy Super Surplus, moved to Austin, Texas and expanded to four stores. In the early 1980’s, Academy added sports and outdoors items to its assortment of products and evolved into a full line sporting goods store.
The company now is one of the nation’s largest sporting goods retailers, operating more than 100 stores across the Southeast and employing more than 13,000 people.
