Houston Avenue is closed at Ponce De Leon Avenue after road construction crews hit a two-inch gas line this morning.
Shortly before 11 a.m., a track hoe ruptured the line about a half block away from the Nu-Way restaurant in the 3500 block of Houston Avenue, said District Chief Joe Pinkney of the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department.
Firefighters evacuated about a half-dozen residents living in the immediate area and an ambulance was called for one of them who was having difficulty breathing, Pinkney said.
Fire crews have hoses drawn at the ready in case of an explosion due to static electricity while they wait for the gas company to shut off the line, Pinkney said.
The road is blocked at Ponce De Leon and cars are detouring along side streets.
Pinkney urged motorists to avoid this area until early afternoon when repairs can be made.
