Bibb County schools Superintendent Sharon Patterson announced the system received two significant awards last week.
State Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox named Northeast High School in Maconas a school that has met the Advanced Placement Challenge.
To get that award, schools with 900 or fewer students had to offer at leastone AP course in each of the four traditional core areas -- English, math,science and social studies.
Patterson said the system is "one of four cities in the nation" which hashad a successful initiative to get more African American students to takeadvanced placement courses and had central office staff give a presentationto College Board officials last week about its progress.

And Patterson said Amanda Wheeler, a third-grade teacher at PorterElementary school which is in Macon as part of the international teachingexchange program was named "International teacher of the Year" for Georgiaby the Visiting International Faculty organization out of North Carolina.
Wheeler is a native of Australia.
