One of the men injured Saturday in a house fire on Columbus Road has been released from an Augusta burn center, but authorities still haven’t identified another man who was killed in the blaze.
Christopher Johnson, 31, of Felton Avenue, was released from the Joseph M. Still Burn Center by Monday morning, said Anne Cordeiro, a hospital spokeswoman. Cordeiro said she couldn’t say exactly when he was released.
Johnson suffered smoke inhalation, Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said.
His brother, 28-year-old Michael Johnson of Columbus Road, was listed in good condition Monday, Cordeiro said.
Jones said Michael Johnson sustained second- and third-degree burns on his back and both arms. He also suffered smoke inhalation.
The identity of the man who died in the blaze has not officially been determined, Jones said. An autopsy was performed Monday. Authorities will be using dental records to confirm the man’s identity, although they think they know who he is.
“He hadn’t called home or made contact with his mother in three days,” Macon-Bibb County Fire Dpeartment Capt. Tom Musselwhite said.
The man’s body was found inside the burning house, located about two blocks west of Pio Nono Avenue near Brentwood Avenue.
A cause of the fire has not been released.
Firefighters received the emergency call about the fire about 5:20 a.m. When they arrived, they found the house engulfed in flames, and the Johnson brothers were outside.
Both men told firefighters no one else was inside the house, according to a Macon police report.
The house was not hooked up to gas or electricity at the time of the fire.
Early reports suggest that the men were “squatting” in the house, Musselwhite said, but the investigation continues.
