Heath Road near Weaver Middle School will be closed beginning this weekend so workers can replace a crumbling drainage pipe that’s causing the road to sag.

The road will be closed at 7 a.m. Saturday, with detours from Thomaston Road to Cavalier Drive to Columbus Road, County Engineer Ken Sheets said. The work is expected to take about two weeks.

Heavy rains in September made the road start to dip in front of the school. Last week’s rains made the problem worse, leading officials to close a lane. The old 24-inch terra cotta pipe deep under the road is failing, Sheets said.

County workers will do most of the work but will need help from a contractor, Appling Brothers, which is expected to do $19,000 worth of work authorized by an emergency vote of county commissioners. Sheets said the pipe is too deep for the county crews to access.

Bibb County schools including Weaver are slated to be closed all of next week. District spokesman Chris Floore said the system plans to tell parents of any traffic changes, likely through its ConnectED telephone notification system.
