Macon council committee signs off on $900K in purchases

The Macon City Council’s Appropriations Committee signed off on more than $900,000 worth of purchases Monday, and the full council is expected to give final approval during tonight’s meeting at City Hall.

The committee agreed to purchase:

— Twenty-eight Ford Crown Victoria police cars and two cargo vans for the Macon Police Department from Riverside Ford. The total price tag is about $789,000.

— Turnout gear for the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department from NAFECO, which is based in Decatur, Ala. The 57 sets of gear, which firefighters wear, will cost the city about $76,200.

— A -ton pickup for the city’s Central Services Department, which handles general maintenance on city buildings. The truck, from Riverside Ford, will cost the city about $25,000.

The committee also signed off on a contract with Babriel, Roeder, Smith & Co. to do some actuarial work for the city. The company, which is based in Florida, will study the city’s future retiree health benefits costs. The company will be paid $14,000.

Tonight’s City Council meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m.
