One of my favorite things to do is root for the underdog. I love to pull for any underdog, whether it’s a person, animal or football team.
I feel strongly about helping the downtrodden because I was the underdog once. Ever since I was thrown away as a baby, I’ve always felt a connection to those who had a rough start in life.
That’s one of the reasons I feel so strongly about helping Charlotte, a blind incredibly sweet Lab mix. She had a really rough start just like me.
You see, when she was a tiny puppy she was thrown away, too. Only she was tied up in a trash bag and left to die. She ended up with a broken jaw in the process. Perhaps being in the trash bag even caused her visual impairment, but I guess we’ll never really know.
I can’t imagine the terror a tiny baby must’ve felt not only being taken away from her mother but maybe even struggling to breathe. It hurts my heart to even think about it.
Luckily she was rescued in the nick of time. She was taken to Save a Pet Inc., a rescue group in Bolingbroke, where she lived for a while. They took excellent care of her, got her spayed and showered her with love.
After living with Save a Pet for some time, Charlotte moved in with her foster mom, Miss Kristin Reid. She’s lived on Miss Kristin’s farm for about a year now, running and playing. And she’s forever making Miss Kristin laugh.
Charlotte would love to have a family to call her own. She wants to belong to someone forever. So she’s hoping the perfect person will adopt her.
But in this regard, Charlotte’s the underdog again. Not because she’s blind. That hardly slows her down. It’s because she’s shy and slow to warm up to a new person.
Usually when a family is interested in adopting a pet they choose one that’s bubbly and outgoing right out of the gate. So poor Charlotte ends up not being chosen.
If only people would give Charlotte a few weeks to get to know them, they would see the same jewel Miss Kristin sees and loves every day. They would see Charlotte’s engaging, lovable personality and her zest for life. They would see a girl who longs to be hugged and held. They would discover the most loyal companion ever.
It must be very difficult to be misunderstood. Charlotte knows she has so much to offer if someone would care enough to look below the surface and see the beauty and love waiting to blossom. She just needs a chance. If you can give her a chance, call Save A Pet at (478) 994-3882.
