El Tequila in Milledgeville -- what a beautiful place. Wood everywhere -- the floor, the walls, the ceiling -- and a very spacious layout of tables.
Chips and salsa tell me a lot about a Mexican restaurant and this one was no different. While the chips were rather thick and bland (just a shake of salt would fix that right up), the salsa was fresh and chunky. The cheese dip was generous and silky smooth, so no short cuts there.
The appetizers looked rather ordinary, so we went straight for the gusto. We got the Super Fajitas for Two. For $26, we got steak, chicken, shrimp, pork loin and chorizo, plus loads of peppers and onions and the usual accoutrements.
There are some restaurants that will load you up on peppers and onions so you don’t notice the lack of meat, but this is not one of those restaurants. We had plenty left over for lunch the next day and even a treat for the puppy after that.
The El Tequila menu has many unusual offerings, so next we tried the Chicken Acapulco for $10.95. This dish features two chicken breasts marinated in orange juice, pineapple and Caribbean spices. It was quite spicey and someone who loves Jamaican jerk would really enjoy it. Our taster was a bit overwhelmed by the heat, but the chicken was very tender and juicy.
The various steak dishes are each $11.95 but ours was too fatty. After the first three gristly bites, we gave up and moved on to something else. I need to stop trying steak entrees at Mexican restaurants, I guess.
Of course, there are the usual flautas, chimichangas, Speedy Gonzales and even chilaquiles, but next time I would try the more unusual sounding dishes. The Camarones ala Diabla are hot and spicy grilled shrimp for $12.75; and the Pollo Espinacas features mushrooms and spinach on grilled chicken for $10.95.
The El Tequila Vegetarian for $7.95 sounds pretty interesting, too. Mushrooms, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, zucchini and broccoli are sauteed in homemade red wine sauce and then stuffed into two flour tortillas. There are five other vegetarian specials as well, including Chilis Poblanos.
If you live near Milledgeville and want to go all the time, you have enough choices that you can have something different every week for a year. If you are passing through or making a special trip, choose something that you can’t get at just any Mexican restaurant. Either way, there are lots of things to enjoy about El Tequila.
