Is frozen yogurt really good for you? It depends on what’s in it and what you put on top of it.
At Peach Swirl, off Bass Road in Macon, they certainly give you options to make your snack healthy. Their yogurts are certified as having live and active cultures, which means they are probiotic and aid digestion.
Some flavors contain Stevia, the natural sweetener du jour that helps you avoid sugar and artificial sweeteners, and they are the only place in town that offers Greek yogurts, painlessly adding protein to your diet. The calcium helps your bones, most items are low in cholesterol and sodium, and they are certified kosher as well.
If you’re already a frozen yogurt fan, you know about the usual flavors of chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, peach, mango, raspberry and the like. Since the flavors at Peach Swirl only change weekly, we could only try 12 flavors, but we got information on the others.
Never miss a local story.
Our very favorite was the candy bar smash. The chocolate base has a subtly salty, peanut buttery flavor that goes well with a few fresh raspberries on top. My new favorite was the California tart, which is more like the tangy kind of tart, not the pastry kind of tart. This abstract flavor is a blank canvas for any sweet toppings you put on it and also pairs well with fruit flavored yogurts. I had mine with the candy bar smash, but it overpowered it and it was like changing gears to eat them together.
The salted caramel pretzel was much too salty and needs to be rethought at the factory. Watching people try it was like watching people try the Beverly flavor at the Coca-Cola museum. Some of our group liked the blue daiquiri ice but otherwise, the Greek-style mocha, the cheesecake and the triple chocolate all stood out as flavors worthy of recommendation.
Keep an eye on their Facebook page to see when other flavors are going in. I’m watching for the seasonal flavors like pumpkin pie and cinnabun, but cherry amaretto, Zeus berry Greek and espresso sound worth a try. Lower on my future list are red velvet, coconut and tropical sorbet, since I’d rather have a little tart with my sweet.
Toppings are mostly the usual fare, such as fresh fruits, boba balls, mochi, gummies and candy bar bits, but they do have real cheesecake pieces and cookie dough, which I don’t remember seeing in other fro-yo joints. They also have waffle cones, pure fruit smoothies and real sliced mango.
Mostly, though, Peach Swirl is all about location, location, location. It’s a great place for after school, especially if you live in the Bass Road area. We went on a Thursday night to make it feel like the weekend already and it would be a great place for a birthday party. Add that it’s relatively healthy, and you’ve got plenty of reasons to try Peach Swirl.
