Good to Go is really two different entities: a restaurant on Riverside Drive and a catering outfit. The menus are really not similar at all, as you can see on their Facebook page.
The outside is tidy and quaint, with a drive-thru to make it easier to get your veggie on. Upon entering, you go up to the counter and select a meat and either two vegetables or three.
On the day we visited, a Monday, they featured turkey and dressing (which I had), sausage jambalaya, baked chicken breast, fried pork chops or fried chicken. At $6.25 for two pork chops, butter peas and green beans, this is one of the best lunch values in town.
Tuesday features beef tips, rib shanks, baked chicken and chicken fingers; Wednesday serves up chicken and dumplings, meatloaf, fried chicken and ham; Thursday has cube steak, spaghetti, Cajun chicken and chicken Parmesan; and Friday is for lovers of catfish and pork chops.
Never miss a local story.
The side choices include the usual items such as macaroni and cheese and collard greens. They also offer deviled eggs, buttered new potatoes, cucumber salad and scalloped potatoes. The candied yams, okra and tomatoes and broccoli casserole that we tried were each fantastic.
Any of these items that I tried have been as good as any other “meat and three” in town. The ingredients are quality and everyone needs a good dose of vegetables once in a while. However, it seems evident that more time and effort is spent on the food than on the upkeep of the restaurant’s shabby interior.
If you have ever been to an event catered by Good to Go, you know that they design beautiful spreads of delicious food. Looking through their Facebook photos of tuxedoed strawberries, gorgeous wedding spreads and colorful luncheons, I wanted to eat all over again.
I would like to see some of that attention to detail put into the interior of this restaurant. The wonderful mural of the river that wraps around the walls seems sadly out of place amidst the water-damaged ceiling tiles and fold-up tables.
I don’t think I’ve ever had anything I didn’t like from this organization, whether it was from the restaurant or the catering. For lunch, though, I would recommend using the drive-thru and taking your delicious meal to the river walk or one of our charming parks.
After all, the restaurant is called “Good to Go.”
