Kathleen’s Big Picture Burgers really deserves a review by Yogi Berra, who once said of a restaurant, “Nobody goes there any more. It’s too crowded.”
The concept -- a quirky burger joint with a movie motif -- is fine. It’s the execution that’s the problem, with a tiny amount of seats, fairly high prices and burgers that aren’t all they should be.
My family had been there several times before I was assigned this review, and were generally pleased. On the day of the review, we’d gotten the worst burgers of any of our visits. We tried to come back for a follow-up, and left because there were no seats; the nearby Subway, in the same plaza with a Publix, got our business that day.
Big Picture offers the ability to customize burgers with toppings, but doesn’t ask how you want burgers cooked. A plain beef or turkey burger, or a grilled chicken breast, runs $5.99.
Lettuce, tomato, raw onions and some other toppings are free. But toppings including any cheese, bacon, mushrooms, sauteed onions or even most sauces adds another $1.
A can of soda and fries adds $2.50.
And so it’s easy to see how “The Terminator” burger, with two patties, two slices of cheese and two orders of bacon costs $14.99 without fries or a drink. It’s harder to swallow when the lunch bill for a couple ran more than $28 for some overcooked burgers.
My wife likes her burger well done; she said hers came at the upper range of that. I tried a turkey burger, which was definitely overcooked. Earlier visits resulted in burgers that were solid, but nothing really special.
The sides we’ve had -- fries, onion rings, sweet potato fries -- were always tasty but sometimes greasy. The kids’ menu consists of chicken tenders, grilled cheese and hot dogs for $5 with fries and a drink.
Big Picture is a neat, but limited, place to eat. There are movie-themed decorations, including the head statue from Indiana Jones, posters of the 50 Foot Woman, and quirky movies like “Labyrinth” on a projection screen.
But there’s all of five tables, plus four stools at a bar.
