No discrimination

In my opinion, I have heard no one make a truer statement in relation to our nation’s race hustlers, as those made by Walter Williams in his column Oct. 1, “Is disagreement racism?” He states, “Our problems with education has nothing to do with racial discrimination as evidenced by the fact that the worse education received is in the very cities were blacks dominate the political structure.

“Our crime problem has nothing to do with racial discrimination due to the fact blacks commit most of the violent crime in America and more than 90 percent of their victims are black.”

In my opinion, the sooner Al Tillman and the NAACP realizes these facts, the sooner they can began to assist in better ways to confront Macon/Bibb’s schools and crime problems. In addressing the issues why blacks receive more citations than whites, they too might finally realize discrimination has nothing to do with it.

Further referencing Williams’ comments, on CNN a young black man made a statement that since a black man is now president, whites look at blacks in a different and more refined manner. I can only speak for myself, but he should not blame whites or give them credit. I believe blacks look at themselves in a different manner due to Obama. He has shown blacks can accomplish and they can run for president based on those accomplishments. It is past time for people to address their own behaviors and failures rather than use the color of their skin to excuse it or place blame on others. We need to apply ourselves and earn our own rather than take from the ownership of others.

A lack of minorities

I have been a resident of Warner Robins since the mid 1960s. During that time, I lived in segregation and through the period of integration. Race was more of an issue during that time and it is still an issue some 40-plus years now.

My concern is with the number of blacks on the Warner Robins police department at the present time. There were more blacks on the police department during the really hard times of the late ’60s and early ’70s than there is now in 2009.

I have observed this problem over many years, and I now feel that I need to speak out about this situation. I would like to know if there is a problem with hiring qualified blacks (African Americans), or with hiring any minority. Is the police department not obtaining applications from qualified applicants?

Use and deception

We have a class of politicians who use the poor, uneducated, untrained people as their personal vote slaves. There are several local politicians who are examples of the abominable practice. These are masters of dressing themselves in the richer well known of society most of the time. When they perceive a need of power recharge they put on their “I am for you who are in need.” Then they use and deceive the same people they have used and deceived countless times.

Taking obscene amounts of money to ensure keeping people in project housing ensures a continued lifestyle of being used and abused. People in all walks of life have minds and abilities that are held back by the same politicians who have for decades claimed they were their friends and are helping them.

Putting money into project cells is temporary eyewash. Putting effort into training the minds of good people with a lot of potential to be self-sufficient would set them free.

Not enough carts

I recently moved here from California. As a senior citizen, I am concerned of the abuse and the lack of the electric carts used for shopping. My sister and I are handicapped and do our shopping at one of the large, one-stop shopping stores in town. There has not been one time that we have walked in and a cart is readily available. The merchants are thinking of how much the carts cost not how much money the disabled person will spend. The disabled senior will shop almost every day because they want to get out of the house and see other people. The abuse is tremendous. I have observed people in electric carts sitting with children in the basket playing and racing them in the parking lot. The handicap seniors still sitting and waiting for a means to do their shopping. As a handicapped senior I wonder how these folks would feel if they were disabled and had no other way to shop. We don’t have a mental disability, we have a physical disability.

Please be more considerate, you may be disabled one day. To all the merchants: Purchase more handicap carts and keep them in good working order.

Insurance talk

The debate on health care has resulted in letters to Viewpoints about benefits received by federal employees, both working and retired, that are all incorrect. I am a retired federal employee who retired from a very well run and money-making organization that poured millions of dollars into the U.S. Treasury each year. From the beginning of the Federal Employee Health Insurance Plan, my insurance has been covered by a private insurance company. It is not free, I pay a considerable sum to it each month. As a result of government-required coverage in the policy, I do not need Medicare Part D, as the company is required to reimburse me an equal percent of my prescription drug costs. Just in case someone reading this thinks I am telling tall tales about a federal agency making millions, I will tell you its name and they can check it out. It was called the Panama Canal Company-Canal Zone Government.

Not liking Obama

If Mr.Volksay thinks Obama has done any “real work” in the past four years, methinks he needs to have his head examined. He campaigned the past three years prior to the election, missed many Senate meetings, was often late and just happened to have been rated as the most liberal senator in the Senate. He has no management, leadership or executive experience, which has become quite evident. Most everything he has done since taking office is just the opposite of what he should have done. He has told more lies than my calculator can keep track of. Methinks he is a one and done and can go back to Chicago and do some more “community organizing,” which just happens to be his biggest claim to fame. Me also thinks he has taken over the lead from Jimmy Carter as the worst president who ever stepped foot in the White House. President George W. Bush and Vice President Cheney often attended those arrivals of the war dead at Dover Air Force Base but did not announce it to the press because they didn’t want pictures taken. It is quite obvious that President Obama likes to be on camera and get his picture taken every chance he can get. Methinks I will be one happy hillbilly as soon as I can see him getting on that big jet plane headed back to Chicago! Then maybe we’ll get a president who likes this country and has a clue about fixing some of our problems instead of making them worse!

It was a photo op

Today, a writer applauded President Obama for being at Dover Air Force Base for the return of several valiant soldiers who were killed in combat and claimed it was “more than Bush or Cheney did.” I believe his comment was misguided for two important reasons. First, he has no idea how the former president and vice-president showed their respect for war dead because they chose to do it in private without news media present. Second, this is reportedly President Obama’s first appearance at Dover for the arrival of flag-draped caskets during his nine-month tenure, and his staff apparently had to wait this long to find a family willing to allow the news media to be present. If this was something more than a photo opportunity for the President, why has he waited so long?

No vote for base resident

My wife received orders to Robins Air Force Base four years ago. Upon arriving I, like many other military spouses, had to switch my state residence to Georgia and I thought of the city of Warner Robins. Unfortunately, I found out differently today when I showed up to do my civic duty and vote in the city elections, I was informed that people living in base housing are not eligible to vote in city elections. I was amazed and a little upset upon being informed of this. Here is a city that claims to support the base and to being supported by the base but does not allow its residents to vote for its leaders. We shop in the city, send our kids to school in the city, employ a majority of the city residents, and many of us retire to the city, but if you live on base are not consider part of the city. This to me is a complete double standard and unfair to military families who decide to become residents.

Shakespeare and birthers

In the play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” William Shakespeare’s judgment was that love is a form of madness that prompted the four Athenian lovers to act in very foolish ways, indeed. It caused Shakespeare to proclaim, “Lord, what fools these mortals be!”

The “birther” movement, people that question President Obama’s legitimacy to be president, is another form of madness. Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, they believe that Obama was not born in Hawaii or that if he was, his citizenship was invalidated by living overseas as a child. Frivolous lawsuits in a dozen states challenging Obama’s birth certificate have been thrown out of court. Recently, in a 30-page ruling, U.S. District Judge David O. Carter of California said his court lacked the jurisdiction to rule on a case intended to unseat a sitting president. Carter’s ruling said the plaintiffs were trying to persuade him to “disregard the constitutional procedures in place for the removal of a sitting president.” “The process for removal of a sitting president — removal for any reason — is within the province of Congress, not the courts,” the ruling stated.

Last spring, GOP senators signed off on a bill that would have forced President Obama to hand over his “long form” (whatever that is) birth certificate. That is where this lunacy may eventually have its final conclusion, with an impeachment battle and “Trial of the Century” in Congress.

Lord, what fools these mortals be!
