Didn’t fool anyone
I attended the town hall meeting held Oct. 10, with congressman Jim Marshall and I was amazed to see the congressman “skirt the issues.” If one would look at his voting record, one would find that he is one of the most liberal members of the House. And, yet he stood before the people of Laurens County and purported that he was conservative. The people on the row that I sat with just laughed. He wasn’t fooling anyone. I pray that in 2010 there will be a great turning over of many of the left-wing legislators on Capitol Hill. May God grant us mercy in this nation that our liberties and freedoms we have enjoyed since our founding fathers may not be snatched away from us by slick-talking politicians.

Holiday dispute
Here we go again. It’s getting that time of year when people like Leonard Pitts Jr. start criticizing the celebration of Christmas. Mr. Pitts stated in his column Oct. 14th, “Christmas is probably unconstitutional.” He continued, it is the only holiday of any religion to be observed by the federal government.
With race being a big issue for some and religion for others, let’s look at the federal holidays because one could claim federal racism rather than church versus state. New Year’s Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day were established for all races of the American people. There is only one holiday that holds the title of a man’s full name; Martin Luther King Jr. It is a day honoring a Baptist minister who worked to bring about social, political and economic equality for “Negroes.” King is recognized as a martyr by two Christian churches. He also helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and served as its first president. King’s Day is the only federal holiday that honors a movement for one race of the American people started by a man who claimed to be a Christian.
Today, taxpayer’s highways, street, schools, playgrounds and public building display his name.
Now compare Martin Luther King Day to Christmas: Christmas is not a religion, nor holds the title “Jesus” but was established to honor a man called Jesus who started a movement for all race of people throughout the world. Only those who believe in his movement call themselves Christians, while those who do not still praise this man for starting a movement teaching love your neighbors, peace on Earth and good will to all men regardless of race.
The holidays noted for people, represents accomplishments and great occurrences in our history, therefore Congress declared a day to honor such, not religious preferences.
By the way, in olden days, nearly all forms ask for religious preference; I always put Baptist for religion is the faith, beliefs or atheism of all races and nationalities only identified by the preference of the person claiming it.

Watch out for tort
Tort reform is the answer most often given by right-wingers as the solution to our health-care crisis, primarily because that is what they hear from the Fox News arm of the Republican Party.
We’ve had tort reform in Georgia since Gov. Perdue’s first term. Have our medical bills or premiums come down? Truth is, the insurance companies have since raised their malpractice premiums substantially.
The only purpose of tort reform is to enhance and protect insurance company profits by making it much more difficult to gain compensation for life ruining medical incompetence.
As long as our Republican state government is bought and paid for by the insurance industry, our medical bills and insurance premiums will continue to rise.

Tool of freedom
Supporters of the Second Amendment are possibly the most rational thinking segment of our society. They are most supportive of our police, yet realize that police cannot be everywhere.
The bottom line is that honest citizens with firearms are our real “homeland security” from protection from local criminals to an image of strength to anyone with intent to do harm.
Be a good citizen, get your Georgia firearm license and training in the proper handling and use of a tool of our freedom.

Militia
There are many comments and complaints about our Second Amendment rights, most of them coming from people who seem to want unfettered access to guns. I have the feeling they have never read the Second Amendment. Here it is in its entirety: A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Note the phrase “well-regulated militia.”

Prayer for Monday, Oct. 26
Dear Lord, we thank you for a new day. We thank you for all of our blessings. If it be your will, bless our service men and women fighting in these far away countries so that we can enjoy freedom. Lord, watch over them and bring them safely back to their loved ones. As we go along this day, may we conduct ourselves in such a way that will be pleasing to you. Maybe a good deed or a kind word or even a smile. Lord, we just love you more and more. Be with all of us, Lord, and we will give you the honor and glory. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.
