WARNER ROBINS — There is still one more election for two Warner Robins City Council Post 1 candidates.
The race was forced into a runoff Tuesday night when none of the five candidates captured a majority of the votes.
Political newcomers Mike Daley and Linda Faye Carnes, who received the highest number of votes, will face off again Dec. 1. Daley received 1,706 votes to Carnes’ 1,324.
Daley grew up in Warner Robins and returned in 2007.
“I’m excited to be in the runoff,” said Daley, who is retired from the transportation business. “I’m ready to recharge the batteries.”
Carnes said she, too, was excited to have made it to a runoff.
“I’m here because God wanted me here. I never in my life thought I would be in this position,” she said.
Carnes, who works as an equipment specialist at Robins Air Force Base, has lived in Warner Robins for 33 years.
Also in the Post 1 race, Doug McDowell received 1,087 votes; Art Howard received 922 votes; and the Rev. Jeffery Walker received 425 votes.
The Post 1 at-large seat was vacated by John Havrilla when he became mayor after the death of Donald Walker in September.
The Post 3 race remained close all night, but after the absentee ballots were counted, political newcomer James “Paul” Shealy came out on top.
He beat Dean Cowart, a former city councilman, 826 to 739.
“I feel elated. I feel like the citizens have given me an opportunity to do what I said I would do,” said Shealy, who has lived in Warner Robins for the past 50 years and is retired from Robins Air Force Base.
“I’ve always been involved with my community one way or another, and now I’ve just got a bigger say-so for me and my neighbors.”
Both candidates said they knew it was going to be a close race.
“Life goes on,” Cowart said after the final vote tally came in. He said he was disappointed more residents didn’t turn out for the election.
Shealy will replace current Post 3 Councilman Terry Horton, who is retiring.
Daron Lee, who was unopposed, won the Post 5 seat, which Clifford Homes Jr. vacated to run for mayor. He received 827 votes.
