Gov. Sonny Perdue has appointed Bibb County Commissioner Elmo Richardson to the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority, Perdue’s office announced Wednesday.

The authority assists local governments, other state agencies and nonprofit groups with improving the environment through a variety of programs that provide financial assistance and other support. The programs generally focus on water, wastewater, solid waste, recycling, land conservation, energy efficiency and fuel storage tanks, according to the authority’s Web site, www.gefa.org.

“It’s a great program,” said Richardson, who worked in an advisory capacity when the authority — then called another name — was established. The Macon Water Authority has benefited from various loans from the group, he said.

Richardson comes from a strong engineering background. He serves as chairman of the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. He is a fellow of the American Consulting Engineers Council and a diplomat for the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, according to a news release.

“It’s what I have done all my professional career,” Richardson said. “It is something that I am interested in, and I’m looking forward to working with.”
