  • Mayor, council must keep sights on the real mission

From the genesis of Macon's current administration, it's been clear that Mayor Robert Reichert and the 15-member City Council has embarked on a difficult and tenuous path. The Ellis administration left the city in a precarious position in more ways than one, the most pressing being Macon may have to repay the government some $300,000 for a federal grant that was either mismanaged or improperly accounted for.

  • Is Barack Obama a marked man? The threat is real

It's not unusual to hear supporters of Barack Obama admit, usually in a low voice, that they are worried. They are worried about his safety. Racism is still alive and well in America, they say, and it's not hard to imagine some nut job taking a shot at him sooner or later.

  • Congressional exercise in futility

Upon hearing that President Bush has invoked executive privilege to keep Congress from obtaining the FBI report concerning Vice President Dick Cheney's possible connection to the outing of CIA agent Velerie Plame, one might feel compelled to ask, "Why did he do that if there's nothing to hide?

  • A potential national threat?

It would seem the Georgia gun law that took effect July 1 entitles people who have a permit to carry concealed firearms to take their guns into the public areas of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta. This troubles Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, who has declared the airport a "guns-free zone." Her reasoning is that "allowing guns (into the airport area) could endanger people because airports remain attractive targets for terrorism," the Associated Press reported.

  • Partisan local elections an impediment to voting

I t's an interesting and frequently educational exercise to see what lessons can be gleaned from voting during primary and general elections. In Tuesday's primary, there were few major surprises (the unseating of incumbent Peach County Commission Chairman James Khoury by Melvin Walker was one), but one lesson emerged: It makes little sense for local elections to require partisan voting.

  • Twiggs BOE should rethink corporal punishment policy

Spare the rod and spoil the child, the saying goes. And in Twiggs County, the board of education, citing disciplinary problems and potentially related higher-than-acceptable teacher turnover, reinstated the rod for discipline - as long as students' parents agree.
