Perry seeks leverage to get road fixed

City officials will stop issuing building permits to a subdivision until a failing road is repaired.

In informal discussions Tuesday, City Council members supported City Manager Lee Gilmour’s plan to withhold the building permits for the Sutton Place subdivision off Langston Road. Gilmour said the property -- lost by one developer in bankruptcy, shifted to a bank and now mostly under the control of another developer -- has a section of road that will need to be dug out for repair. The new developer has twice agreed to the fix but hasn’t followed through, Gilmour said. The developer was not identified in the meeting.

City officials worried the developer could sell the rest of the lots and walk away, and the building permits give the city leverage. The city has not accepted the road.

The city also will alert potential buyers by posting a sign noting that the lots won’t be buildable until the road is fixed.

“There’s 26 empty lots,” Councilman Riley Hunt observed before noting: “He’ll fix it.”

Separately, the city thanked Robins Air Force Base staff who took a crash truck to help with a difficult warehouse fire last month. Peach County and Warner Robins also sent substantial staff and equipment to help with the fire at Big Indian Feed & Tack. Perry Fire Chief Joel Gray said the base’s crash truck did in 40 minutes what would have taken firefighters 10 to 12 hours to do.

“What matters to us is being a good neighbor,” Col. Chris Hill said during the ceremony.
