Zoning variances approved for new Family Dollar planned for Macon

The Macon zoning commission gave its OK on Monday to two variance requests that will allow a new Family Dollar to be built in east Macon.

The Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission approved a variance in rear yard setback requirements and a variance in parking requirements to allow a Family Dollar at 2035 Shurling Drive.

The company is planning to build a 9,200-square-foot store on a 1.5-acre tract on Shurling at Regent Street, said Charles Dunstan of Augusta. Family Dollar is under contract to buy the property, he said.

The variances are necessary because of the property’s triangular shape, Dunstan said.

Any security lights placed in the rear of the property would be shielded from nearby residents, he said. Also, a privacy fence will be installed along Regent Street.

In another matter, zoning commissioners approved a conditional-use permit for 5935 Zebulon Road to allow the Murphy Oil fuel center in front of Wal-Mart to expand its kiosk. The commission approved the existing 183-square-foot fuel center with four gas pumps in 2003.

Plans are to add 151 square feet to the existing kiosk.

The addition will allow room for retail sales items previously displayed outside the kiosk.
