Education Notebook: Houston schools encourage parents to register children now

The Houston County school system is continuing to register new students. Parents may register their children at the central registration office from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Students currently enrolled in the system’s pre-kindergarten program will automatically be registered for kindergarten, but children new to Houston County need to register. School begins July 31, and officials encourage parents to register their children as soon as possible, according to a news release.

Kindergarten students must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1. The following items are required for registration: the parent or guardian’s photo identification; certified birth certificate; custody orders, if applicable; Social Security card; ear, eye and dental screening; immunization certificate; proof of eligibility for government medical or food assistance, if applicable; a lease or mortgage statement; and a second proof of residence such as a utility bill, property tax or income tax statement, automobile insurance or registration, or mail from any government agency.

Bibb schools to hold Title I program sessions

The Bibb County school district’s Title I department is inviting parents, guardians and community members to attend meetings to review the District Parent Involvement Policy and the Comprehensive LEA Improvement Plan for the upcoming school year.

The sessions will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the district’s Career Center Annex, 2003 Riverside Drive, Suite D, in Macon.

In addition, parents of students attending the nine schools with the Flexible Learning Program are invited to review that program during the sessions. Those schools are Burghard Elementary, Ingram-Pye Elementary, King-Danforth Elementary, Howard Middle, Miller Magnet Middle, Weaver Middle, Central High, Hutchings College and Career Academy, and Northeast High.

Each parent attending will be entered into a drawing for book bags and school supplies. Also, 50 book bags will be given away as door prizes at each meeting, according to a news release.

Mercer to host festival during first Southern Conference game

Mercer University will celebrate its first weekend of competition in the Southern Conference with a Sept. 5 event, which includes a concert and pep rally.

The event, dubbed SoConFest, begins at Black Field at 7 p.m. with a pep rally in preparation for the next day’s football game, when Mercer takes on Furman University. Following the pep rally, a concert will be headlined by the New Orleans rock group, The Revivalists. The concert will be opened by the local group sunDollars. The event is free and open to the public.

Georgia College has been named a College of Distinction

Georgia College recently was one of two public colleges and universities in the state to be named a Public College of Distinction.

A committee of high school counselors, college administrators and the Colleges of Distinction selection team nominated each institution for the national honor. The team uses information from college admission experts along with reviews of administration, faculty, alumni and students. A team also visits every campus, according to a news release.
