A 4-year-old girl drowned at a party in Cochran on Friday afternoon.

Bleckley County Coroner Danny Mathis said there was a large family Fourth of July party going on at a home with an in-ground swimming pool. Someone noticed the girl missing and they found her in the bottom of the pool.

“It just looks like it was a terrible accident,” he said.

He declined to release the name at this time. Due to state protocol for the death of a child, Mathis said there will be an autopsy as well as other required procedures.

The girl was taken to Bleckley Memorial Hospital and Mathis said personnel there “worked diligently” to save her, but she was pronounced dead.
