Work to close part of Feagin Mill Road for three days

WARNER ROBINS -- Replacement of a drainage pipe is going to shut down a busy road for three days.

Unless weather interferes, Feagin Mill Road will close July 12-14 from Houston Lake Road to Peach Blossom Road. Area residents still will be able to get to their homes.

The road is being widened, and a pipe 15 feet under the road has to be replaced.

That will require cutting a large gash across the road, the reason it has to be closed.

The county commissioners approved the closure at Tuesday’s meeting. County Commission Chairman Tommy Stalnaker said the road closure will have a big impact, and he expects to get many complaints. But he said there isn’t any other choice.

“Obviously, the inconvenience for these few days we did not want to happen,” Stalnaker said. “But the alternative to build a run-around was just not feasible.”

He said it will be a significant project because the work crew cannot simply dig a trench the size of the 60-inch pipe. It has to be dug wide for the safety of the workers.

“If they are able to do it in the time frame they are talking about doing it in, they are going to be working almost around the clock in order to get that done,” Stalnaker said.

Operations Director Robbie Dunbar said motorists traveling west on Feagin Mill would detour by turning left on Peach Blossom Road, then right on Ga. 96 and north on Houston Lake Road. Those traveling east would do the opposite. The detour is three miles.

The road is being widened, and Dunbar said when the county does such projects it typically replaces the metal culverts with concrete pipes.
