ERICKSON: Our present insanity

June 27, 2014

Historian Gertrude Himmelfarb once wrote, “What was once stigmatized as deviant behavior is now tolerated and even sanctioned; what was once regarded as abnormal has been normalized ... As deviancy is normalized, so what was once normal becomes deviant. The kind of family that has been regarded for centuries as natural and moral -- the ‘bourgeois’ family as it is invidiously called -- is now seen as pathological”

We are living in the insane, mixed up world she described. In the present insanity of the modern age, one’s sexual orientation is biological and one’s gender is a choice. It is also utter nonsense most often uttered by people who claim science as their god but have no settled science to show for this.

Thus we arrive back at the case of Flint Dollar, the Catholic school teacher who was fired for his plan to corrupt one of the sacraments of the Catholic Church -- marriage. Dollar is gay and plans to marry his boyfriend. The Catholic Church was fine with Dollar being gay and being a teacher. But they could not let him be a teacher within what is, for all intents and purposes, a ministry and engage in corruption of a sacrament.

We should stop and address those screaming about divorce. Within the parameters of this particular issue, the divorce would have occurred from a marriage that involved a man and a woman. Dollar’s situation is different in that his union does not start with the only holy union God ordained.

If all the hysteria over this case was not enough, Dollar has chosen to escalate it. He has filed a complaint with the EEOC for gender discrimination. He does so because sexual orientation is not a protected class under federal discrimination laws. So we are left with the absurd claim that Dollar is a man who was fired from him job because he is a man who does not behave like a man -- or something.

Frankly, the whole thing is so absurd he and his lawyer should be commended on the absurdity of it. In a world where normal is considered offensive and the tolerant wish to drive all the nonconformists out of the public square, I suspect he will have a smashingly successful case.

No one suggests that Dollar should be fired for his sexual orientation. He was not. He was fired over the issue of the sacrament in which he has chosen to participate in a way contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church that employees him.

A community that prides itself on tolerance has decided to be quite intolerant of the decision. Those who practice acceptance and tolerance cannot accept that there are those, because of their faith and values, who refuse to conform to the secular world. They could, as some of the board members of the school did, resign and move on. Instead, they have chosen to force their worldview on others. They will not stop until everyone conforms. Those who do not will be denied livelihoods, access to the public square, and the fight to practice their religion.

The secularists insist freedom of religion itself be confined to a freedom of worship on a Sunday morning. Those who are defined by their faiths and not their sexual predilections will be outcasts from society.

The modern world has lost its mind. Those secularists, ostracized and marginalized for living their faith have one key advantage -- they procreate the most and will one day be left picking up the pieces and rebuilding society once sanity returns.
